Tianjin, one of China’s four municipalities directly under the central government, is a major port city in northern China. Located on the western shore of the Bohai Sea, about 120 kilometers from Beijing, it serves as the capital’s maritime gateway. With an area of nearly 12,000 square kilometers and a population of over 13.6 million, Tianjin ranks as China’s third-largest municipality.
The city’s name means “Heavenly Ford”. Its history dates back to 1404 when it was officially established as a walled city, making it the only ancient Chinese city with a precise founding record. By the Qing Dynasty, Tianjin had become northern China’s leading economic center due to its location at the Grand Canal’s northern terminus. In 1860, it was opened as a treaty port, exposing it to Western influence and leaving a legacy of European-style architecture that still defines its streetscape today.
Today, Tianjin is a powerhouse of modern industry and trade. It is an advanced manufacturing and R&D base, a northern international shipping center, and a key node in the Belt and Road Initiative. The Tianjin Port ranks among the world’s busiest. The city is also a vibrant cultural destination, home to landmarks like the iconic Tianjin Eye Ferris wheel, the Ancient Cultural Street, and the Five Great Avenues with their preserved European villas. Renowned for its folk arts, including clay figurines and woodblock prints, as well as its famous snacks, Tianjin seamlessly blends its rich historical heritage with dynamic modern energy.
